FAQ from African History?
The Scramble for Africa was the period between the late 19th century and early 20th century where European powers partitioned and colonized the African continent. The main causes were economic, political, and social. The increasing demand for raw materials, such as rubber and diamonds, drove European countries to compete for African colonies, while political rivalries between European nations also played a role. Additionally, Europeans believed that they had a moral duty to bring civilization to the 'backward' Africans, and religious motives were also present.
The independence of African countries followed a long struggle against their colonial masters. In the 20th century, African nationalist movements demanded an end to the colonial rule, and some of the movements resorted to armed struggle. The colonial powers, weakened by the two world wars and the rise of a global anti-colonial movement, eventually ceded power to African nationalists. Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence in 1957, and this marked the beginning of a wave of African independence movements that culminated in the decolonization of most African countries in the 1960s and 1970s.
